Episode 79 Topo Maps, Google Maps, and Aerial Photos

Play

This episode is all about using maps to find hunting spots. I cover all the details, tips, and Items that help me out. Scouting from maps is my number one way to get a feel for a new area and narrow down the funnels.

CORRECTION: Charles told me of an error I made on the bold lines on topo maps.  The difference between two bold (heavy) lines on a topo map published by the USGS is five times the contour interval, not four. So if the contour interval is 20 feet, the difference between two bold lines will be 100 feet, not 80. Likewise for 100-foot and 200-foot intervals > 500 feet and 1000 feet, respectively.

Thanks Charles for catching this!

  1. Hi Jason. I enjoy your podcasts. This one needs a correction noted.

    • Thanks for the correction. Not sure what I was thinking when I did the math in my head on that one. I will get this correction noted on the podcast page. Thanks again!

  2. Thanks for another informative podcast! You mentioned mytopo in your podcast. There is a free site I have found rather useful is http://caltopo.com/ You can overlay topographic maps and satellite photos along with a number of other overlays I have found kind of useful. Keep up the great work! Can’t wait for the next podcast,
